Iron-era houses and their chimneys
Wharton was built on iron. It started as Port Oram, an ore-shipping port on the Morris Canal, and was renamed in 1902 for the industrialist Joseph Wharton. The borough still includes the old settlements of Irondale, Luxemburg, Maryville and Mount Pleasant. The Borough of Wharton is the place to check local requirements.
Worker housing from the canal and furnace years was heated by coal and wood stoves, and those houses were built with a chimney for each. Over time the stoves gave way to central furnaces, but the chimneys stayed in use, often with no liner or with one that has long since deteriorated.
A flue serving a modern furnace or water heater rarely looks sooty, yet it still sheds mortar and flakes that can pile up at the base and block the connector. Clearing that and confirming the flue is open is a large part of sweeping in a town like this.
