Chimney sweeping in the Township of Lakes
Byram calls itself the Township of Lakes, with roughly two dozen lakes and ponds inside its borders. Its neighbourhoods include Forest Lakes, Cranberry Lake, Brookwood, Lackawanna and Roseville. Byram Township posts notices and permit details for all of them.
Lake-community houses in the woods have a particular set of chimney problems. Tall trees stand close to the roof, so leaves and pine needles collect on the crown and in any flue without a cap. Shade keeps masonry damp, which encourages moss and speeds up mortar wear. Wildlife is never far away.
Wood heat is also a practical choice out here, and a stove that runs for most of the winter loads a liner quickly. For homes that burn daily, a sweep partway through the season as well as before it is sensible.
