A township built largely in the 1970s and 1980s
Mount Olive was formed from part of Roxbury in 1871 and was once known for its forges and iron works. Its big change came later. Between 1970 and 1980 the population grew by about 80 percent. Mount Olive Township provides permit and local information for residents.
Houses from that building boom very often came with a factory-built fireplace. Instead of brick and clay tile, these have a metal firebox and a double- or triple-wall metal chimney running up a framed chase with a metal cover on top. They are safe when maintained and unforgiving when neglected.
Sweeping one means using poly brushes that will not scratch the pipe, checking that the sections are still locked together, and looking at the chase cover. A rusted chase cover is the most common source of water in a prefabricated chimney, and it is easy to miss from the ground.
