Older village chimneys in Stanhope
Stanhope is a compact borough with deep roots. It developed in the Morris Canal era and became its own municipality in 1904, when it separated from Byram Township. Residents deal with the Borough of Stanhope for local permits and notices.
A village of this age has plenty of chimneys that predate modern liners. Some serve a fireplace. Many were built to vent a coal or oil furnace in the basement and now carry the exhaust of a newer appliance. A sweep on a flue like this is as much about finding out what the chimney is made of as about removing soot.
Houses near Lake Musconetcong add damp air to the picture. Moisture and soot together make an acidic paste that is hard on mortar, so flues here benefit from being cleaned on schedule and not left for a second or third winter.
