Sweeping chimneys in Sparta's lake communities
Sparta is a township of lake neighbourhoods. Sparta Township counts Lake Mohawk, Sunset Lake and the Highlands among its communities, and each was built in its own era with its own kind of house.
Lake Mohawk dates from the 1920s, and many of its homes follow a rustic Tudor and Normandy style with tall stone fireplaces and beamed ceilings. Those fireplaces are the centre of the house, and they are large. A wide firebox and a tall masonry flue hold a lot of soot, and an older clay-tile liner behind stonework is hard to judge without sweeping it first.
Newer parts of the township lean toward wood stoves, inserts and prefabricated chimneys. They need a different brush, a different approach and usually a more frequent sweep, because slow-burning appliances leave more creosote in the liner.
