Mid-century growth and hard-working flues
Jefferson is the northernmost township in Morris County and is usually described in two halves, Lake Hopatcong and Milton. Its communities include Oak Ridge, Newfoundland, Lake Shawnee and Berkshire Valley. Jefferson Township is the official source for permits and local notices.
The township grew fast in the middle of the last century. Its population rose from under 3,000 in 1950 to more than 14,000 by 1970, so a large share of its houses went up in the same couple of decades. Chimneys from that period are now old enough for clay tiles to have cracked, crowns to have weathered and original dampers to have rusted.
A sweep is often the first time anyone has looked up one of these flues in years. Higher, colder parts of the township also see long burning seasons, which means more creosote between visits.
