Around the lake at Budd Lake
Budd Lake is named for the glacial lake at its centre, which covers roughly 374 acres and is the source of the South Branch of the Raritan River. The community is part of Mount Olive Township and has no local government of its own.
Houses close to the shore are a mixed group. Small older homes stand beside rebuilt and enlarged ones, and fireplaces and stoves have been added, removed and replaced over the years. That history shows up in the chimneys. It is not unusual to find a stove connected to a flue that was built for something else.
A sweep is a good moment to sort that out. Once the flue is clean it is clear what is connected to it, what it is lined with and whether the two suit each other. Away from the shore, the newer streets have the factory-built fireplaces common across the rest of the township.
