Victorian-era chimneys in a walking town
Dover has been making heat for a long time. Its nineteenth-century industries included iron and mill works and factories that produced stoves, furnaces and ranges. The Blackwell Street Historic District preserves the downtown from that period, and the Town of Dover publishes current local information.
The residential streets around the centre are full of houses from the same era, set close together on small lots. Victorian houses were commonly built with several flues inside one chimney stack, each serving a different room or appliance. Today some are in use, some are capped and some are simply forgotten.
Sweeping here starts with working out which flue does what. An unused flue left open at the top collects water and debris that end up staining walls inside. A flue that has been reused for a furnace needs to be clear and correctly lined. Both get checked while the brushes are out.
