Established streets at the heart of Roxbury
Succasunna takes its name from a Lenape phrase meaning land of black stones, a reference to the iron ore that drew settlers here around 1740. It is not a separate municipality. It is the part of Roxbury Township that functions as its downtown.
The streets around that centre hold some of the township's oldest houses along with long-settled suburban blocks. In practical terms, most chimneys here are masonry, and many have been in service for well over half a century.
On chimneys of that age the sweep and the check that follows it are equally important. Brushing clears the flue. Looking it over afterwards is what reveals a missing mortar joint between tiles or a damper plate that has rusted thin. Catching those at a routine visit costs far less than finding them after a leak or a smoky fire.
